Scott Creek 4 - Test Tile - Clay Extruder Die
Scott Creek 4 - Test Tile - Clay Extruder Die
This die extrudes a shape to test glazes.
The tile has several features that might be of interest during glaze testing. On one side, a section of ridges tests how a glaze breaks across surfaces. The opposite side is smooth to see how the glaze flows down a straight wall. There is room below the ridges for a small stamp. The base is stable to stand in a kiln, but narrow enough to hang the tile on a wall, if you poke a small hole at the top.
The die fits in a Scott Creek 4" round extruder.
Extrusion dimensions:The overall height of the tile extrusion is 2 1/2" tall and the base is 1 3/4" wide. The overall thickness of the tile is ~1/4". The goal was to be sturdy but minimize the clay used.
Die Dimensions: The die is 4 1/2" in diameter and about 5/16" thick.
Materials
Materials
The die and cutter are 3D-printed using PLA filament. PLA is a plastic made from starch (not petrochemicals) and is compostable in industrial composters.
It is the same material used to make compostable eating utensils.
